~ Band Members

Shadi AlHaj is no longer a member of WhiteFlag Project. He acknowledges his commitment to the band up until 2006.Since this time Shadi feels that the band is not representative of his ’views’ on the world.
We respect and support Shadi and would like to make it clear that any info on Shadi after 2006 is to be ignored.
We are doing our best to remove Shadi from all WF Project data after this time.

~ US tour summing up

We were in the US for 15 days.
We needed to rehearse as fast as possible as we hadn’t met for over a year, for some of us it was 3 years.
We were fantastically fortunate as Aaron (WhiteFlag's guitar player) father invited us to stay and rehearse at the Am Kolel sanctuary
3 days after we landed, at the Bossa
’ ;one of the most interesting developments in D.C. jazz is the scene for which Bossa acts as a hub. Some of the most innovative music coming out of the city is played there on a nightly basis by a growing group of highly trained musicians who have studied musical tradition, but also embrace a forward looking ethos’:’DCist Interview’
Rob Coltun, Bosa club owner, gave us a wonderful opportunity to do a ’work it out gig’ in his club...we had a tremendous time..Bossa Club-Washington DC.
So thanx so much Rob

It is very much a reunion as all the players from the core group will be there
Shadi, Gani, Zaher, Katja, Mark and our new guitar player Aaron Shneyer. Unfortunately it is really hard for Yassin to come at this time as Gaza is HORRIFICALLY sealed and getting ’OUT’ is almost impossible...
Oh what a wonderful world

~ WhiteFlag Project host Sharon Katz and Nomsa Majola from the Peace Train

Shuni/Milestone 4/4/09 21:00

WhiteFlag Project hosts Grammy nominated band Sharon Katz and the Peace Train, for a one time concert playing and Jammin’ on the musics of South Africa/ US and the Middle East...

Sharon katz,Namosa
Sharon Katz & Nomsa Majola of The Peace Train Nomsa Majola was born in Soweto, South Africa under the Apartheid regime. After schooling in the deeply traditional rural areas of KwaZulu, she formed an Indlamu dance company and performed throughout South Africa and Europe before immigrating to America with her family. She joined The Peace Train as a dancer and singer in 2003 and has toured with the band from coast-to-coast, including for the Carnegie Hall World Music series, where her unique, energetic Zulu dancing and educational skills distinguish her as a performing artist and workshop leader.

Sharon Katz was born and educated in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After defying the Apartheid regime to travel and perform across the racial barriers, she earned a Master’s Degree in Music Therapy. She and Nonhlanhla Wanda formed The Peace Train in 1992 as South Africa’s first, 500-member, multiracial performance group and toured in support of Nelson Mandela’s Presidential campaign. When international TV coverage resulted in American performance invitations, The Peace Train moved its home base to Philadelphia in 1999. Sharon is a skilled African-picking guitarist, composer and singer who has performed with Isicathamiya masters Ladysmith Black Mambazo as well as the divas Miriam Makeba and Dolly Rathebe. Her debut American CD, Imbizo, was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best World Music. Sting recorded her for his Carnival! CD with Elton John, Madonna and Tina Turner.

~ Amnesty International gig

On the 6 November WF will be doing a small private gig for amnesty international who are having a reception to present a book. As this is a private function we would not normally mention the Gig-

but we all need to read this book

.- Prima di lasciarsi- Before we say goodbye- ﻕﺮﺘﻔﻧ ﻥﺃ ﻞﺒﻗ ;an extraordinary book by Gabriella Ambrosio.

"Prima di lasciarsi can do infinitively more for the peace between the two people than hundreds of political good-will talks I have heard" (Ali Rashid, former head of the Palestinian delegation in Italy)

- The Book: “Prima di lasciarsi" ("Before We Say Goodbye”) is a novel based on a true story of a suicide bombing attack by a seventeen year-old Palestinian girl from the Deheisha refugee camp at a supermarket in Kiryat Yovel, Jerusalem in 2002. The book follows the last hours in the lives of the bomber and her victims – a seventeen year-old girl from Jerusalem and the security guard whose intervention, with his own body, saved the lives of the rest of the people at the busy market on that Passover Eve.

~ HeartBeat-

WF will be playing a short set at the YMCA in Jerusalem on the 21 of September.
'Heart Beat' is a small organization that is supporting the creation of a band of Palestinian and Israeli teenagers. After a year of meeting composing and rehearsing they are ready to play their first concert and we will go and join in :-)

~ Creation of Peace Festival

WhiteFlag was invited to play at the "Creation of Peace" Festival!
30th of August-Kazan-Russia

www.creationofpeace.ru

So this was an amazing gig...Kazan is an extraordinary city and was celebrating its 1000 year birthday!

A city whose population is half Moslem and half Christian; These guys have really worked out how to live together. There were, at the end of the day, in the region of 200,000 people in the crowd. Check out the following interview with Andrey Makarevich, legendary Russian rock star, and organizer of the event:

"The idea of the festival appeared about a year ago when I with Sergei Mirov discussed the situation in which the group "White flag" had found themselves. They have problems because the group comprises the citizens of Israel and Palestine. That is why they can work neither in Israel nor in Palestine. They have to work in Europe. At present the ventures on the religious and national basis take place very often. And we believe that it is music that can unite people."

We thought that was pretty cool but much more important than that, is the understanding that musicians commitment to play; their right to play, represents a powerful tool in creating unity between peoples of the world...gotta go will update later interviews, news shows, amazing musicians/bands and more..

We made some wonderful new friends in Kazan...Nina and Kennon, Tony Levin, Chaek, KTU, Keith Emerson... the list goes on.

Kazan was unique in so much that the festival was not scared to use the power off love/music...corny/old school maybe, but none the less, very real, and of course, timeless. Everybody there was motivated to give and the raw potential of the power of music as a healing force was experienced by all.

And the music, what a banquet of music, all feeding off the tradition and power of good oll Rock ’n’ Roll. It all works together, this festival showed that all music is part of the rock world and that it is all about energy.

Salech, our Darbuka player, has received refugee status in Switzerland and will be able to bring his family to Switzerland, unfortunately his status does not yet allow him to join us in Russia but we are banking on him in 2009.
